What you will need.

A table saw to rip the slats starting with either planks (2 "x12") or plywood sheets.

A palm sander

Level, drill, etc. (we assume that if you have a regular table saw, you have the basics too)

Wood primer (for softwoods, such as pine), wood stain, brush for application

Paint (for painting the back wall, usually black is perfect for creating that oh-so-sexy contrast)

Wood slat wall paneling (semi-DIY, beginner level)

You can actually order pre-made wood slat wall panels directly to your door. They're already secured to a black felt backing, so all you have to do is secure them to your wall. If you can hang picture frames, you can probably hang these as well.

While not as inexpensive as doing the whole project yourself, they are still valuable considering the convenience and how incredible they look.

To install these, you'll only need a drill and a level for the most basic of installations. If you're installing in drywall, make sure you find studs or use drywall anchors.

From here, it's really as simple as pre-drilling the holes and screwing the felt to the wall with black screws. If you want to take it a step further, you can cut the slats to a specific length with a handsaw or circular saw, or lengthen them to make them longer if you have a higher ceiling.
